Knaresborough History and heritage: The Church of St John the Baptist

A treasure house at the heart of this historic market town, St John the Baptist dates from 1114 when King Henry I gave the church to the Augustinian Priory at Nostell. Evidence of the early church can be seen in the string course and in the blocked up windows in the chancel, which is flanked on either side by 13th century chapels. With magnificent memorials in the Slingsby family chapel, glass by Morris and Co. and many other interesting features St John's is not to be missed. Service times: Sun 0800 Holy Communion; Sun 1030 Family Eucharist; 4th Sun 1600 Evensong.
